Fashion’s prettiest(and comfiest) new trend

Soft tailoring, knits that hold their shape, colours that flatter more people than they should. Why this season’s easiest look is also its most elegant, and how to build it from what you own.

Soft

Every few years fashion rediscovers comfort and calls it new. This time the name is “soft tailoring”: jackets with the padding taken out, trousers with a little more room, knits that do the work a blazer used to do. It photographs beautifully, and for once it feels as good as it looks.

Why it works on almost everyone

The trick is proportion, not price. A relaxed shoulder lengthens the neck. A wide leg with a cropped top balances the hips. A fine knit under an unstructured jacket reads as considered, even when you put it together in ninety seconds. Because nothing is tight, nothing fights your body. Because everything is tonal, nothing fights your colouring.

The most flattering thing you can wear is something you can breathe in.

Build it from what you own

You probably have most of it already. Open your wardrobe in StyleVesti, filter by “knits” and “trousers”, and look for the pieces that sit closest to your palette. Then:

  • Pair your finest knit with your best-cut trouser. Tuck the front only.
  • Add a third piece with structure: a cinched blazer, a cropped leather jacket, a tailored coat.
  • Keep shoes quiet. A pointed flat, a sleek sneaker, an ankle boot with no hardware.
  • Try it on before you commit. Thirty seconds, no undressing, and you’ll see whether the drape is right for your shape.

The mistakes to skip

Too soft everywhere turns into pyjamas. Keep one sharp line: a crease, a collar, a belt. And resist buying a whole new wardrobe for it. The point of the trend is ease, and ease starts with wearing more of what you already own.

Ask the Muse for “a soft tailoring capsule for a work week” and it will answer with pictures, from your closet first.

The “one sharp line” rule fixed my whole look. I’d been wearing soft everything and wondering why it felt sloppy. A belt. That’s it.

Tried this with the week planner: one knit, two trousers, one blazer, five days. Nobody noticed it was the same four things. I did, happily.
